More Developments

This just in - the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Siyassa reports that one ton of explosives was reported missing from a Syrian base in the Bekaa valley in Lebanon, a few weeks before the explosion that killed Rafik Hariri (hat tip, Firas). As the UN-sponsored investigation continues, French investigators (not further identified) allegedly have managed to learn that the explosives used in the blast are of a type only recently acquired by the Syrian army.

Also, local sources indicate that Beirut morgues still contain the unidentified and unclaimed bodies of several blast victims. If true, this appears consistent with the Lebanese interior ministry's unique crisis management methodology revealed by the Mohammed Ghalayni debacle two days ago. That is (in linear flow-chart form): Crisis - Run - Hide - Deflect - Deny - Capitulate - Run - Hide. There are more dimensions to it than this, but you get the picture.

Bit of a suspect source! As-Siyasiyah has been leading a campaign against Syria for a while. It was their editor who famously decried Syria's 'occupation' of Lebanon months before anyone but Israel referred to it as an occupation.

Kuwait has generally been one of Syria's closest allies, but someone in As-Siyasiyah obviously has something to gain from getting Syria out of Lebanon.

Hence the objective presentation - responsible readers will come to their own conclusions. Sure enough, if the story turns out not to be true, it won't be the first time that Al-Siyasiya has reported first, confirmed later (or not at all). At any rate, the burden of confirmation of stories belongs to all reporters (public expectations of us bloggers are much lower, so we can just sharp-shoot at the facts as presented... what a luxury), and I'll be the first one to criticize Al-Siyasiya as soon as SANA cleans up its act as well. Until then, I am just a Caveman...

Oooh, SANA/Syria Times are laughable! Wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. But no one take's those Soviet Era journalists seriously. Siyasiyah claims distance from the government, but in my view still needs a health warning.

When Al-Iraqiyah broadcast the insurgents 'confessing' to be trained in Lattaqiyah - even the US authorities cast doubt on it, and it was reported as 'American funded broadcaster claims that...' rather than 'Syrians confess'.

True we bloggers aren't subject to the scrutiny that other publications are. But if people are going to form their own judgements from our musings, then they need to know what's behind particular 'stories' otherwise we're lying to them. Like being a SANA journalist!

sasa you are mistaken... kuwait is not of syria's closes allies. Kuwait is a closer allie to lebanon than it is to syria ... proof being that its easier to get a visa to kuwait if ur lebanese than if u are syrian....

as for the report in al siyasah... true editor in chief, ahmeh al jarallah has issues with syria... he is wanted for trial or something of the sort... but this piece of news was also in the kuwaiti newspaper al qabas yesterday and i read somewhere online 2 days ago... i dont know if it is reliable news or not ...
