The Siege of Mari

Not all villages in southern Lebanon are Shiite. Just above the abandoned SLA base at the old Majidiyya estate on the Lebanon-Israel border sits a small, quiet Druse village called Mari. You will not find Mari on any maps, but at the beginning of the current conflict Mari found itself caught between the Israeli Air Force, which apparently wanted to avoid bombing the village directly, and Hizbullah, which wanted to enter the town at all costs. You see, Mari's location would provide the militia an excellent overview of the Israeli city of Kiryat Shmona (and the settlement of Metulla, which is closer but much smaller), and finding a way to operate there would give Hizbullah increased civilian cover for their Katyusha rocket fire.

Residents who have recently escaped from Mari tell of a dramatic, desperate situation in the village. The Druse residents, who have no affinity at all for Hizbullah, resisted Hizbullah's attempts to enter the village. The IAF apparently and unwittingly assisted in their resistance by bombing the roads leading into the village, cutting off the militia's ability to enter the town, at least temporarily. Hizbullah responded by cutting off the town's electricity and water supply, essentially laying seige to a town on its own side of the border, hoping that its residents would pack up and leave. Many of them have done so. My sources say that Hizbullah has been desperate to enter the village but has as of yet been unable to do so in large numbers. Residents also describe a growing humanitarian crisis in the village due to the lack of fresh water.

So far this is all the information that I have on this development.

Update: In the interests of clarity, let me reiterate what I have already said: Hizbullah attempted to enter Mari not to defend it from attackers, but so they could fire rockets from the village toward Israel. Hizbullah's intention was to bring Israeli reprisals on the town, ostensibly to destroy or damage it significantly, and to cause greater civilian suffering. Hizbullah's MO and tactics are well-known in the south. However, Druse typically defend their own villages, and in the case of Mari (a place I have been to several times, many of whose residents I know personally), the residents have desperately tried to keep Hizbullah fighters out of their area.

al-Mari...this is the same village you wrote about in your Nov. 2005 post Hizbullah's Shoots Its Way Into The Debate?

Update: I just got word from an eyewitness that Hizbullah now occupies several positions within the old SLA base in Majidiyya and had attempted to set up bivouacs and strike positions inside the small hamlet of al-Mari just above Majidiyya (this is part of UNIFIL's India Battalion area of responsibility - just across the Lebanon-Israel border from al-Ghajar). My source says that HA began warning the villagers of an impending operation five or more days ago. This just goes to show that Hizbullah had this whole thing planned out long ago, and the operation does not result from developments on the other side of the border.

Also written in that post regarding Hizbollah's attacks on IDF forces and attempts to kidnap soldiers, a dire prophecy...

to attempt such a reckless maneuver has proven extremely convincing of the party's true animosity toward the Lebanese government. The message from Hizbullah to the government is this - you must deal with us as we are, weapons and all, for we can and will wreck your foreign policy otherwise (and we may wreck it anyway). There is reason to fear more superlatives in the near future on this matter.

Yes, same place. It's hard to find on the map, but if you can find Kfar Kila, it is just northeast of that, where the Lebanese border makes a button-hook and turns southeast. Chebaa Farms is not too far away. The Google Earth view is obscured by what looks like smoke or clouds (or clouds of smoke), otherwise you would be able to see the old base.

Could you explain me situation with Chebaa Farms, I thought Israeli Lebanese border was certified by UN, how Chebaa Farms can be disputed territory in this case. Did Israel failed to comply with 1559 itself? And do not you think that without obvious and overwhelming MILITARY SUCCESS for Israeli side disaster is unavoidable?
Thank you are doing terrific job you and Anton Efendi are two best blogs on the topic around free from bias in any side and free form propaganda . Way to go!! We need you guys!! Keep going !!

The United Nations did certify the Israeli withdrawal, asserting that the Chebaa Farms area belongs to Syria. Under this set of circumstances, Israel was not compelled to withdraw from Chebaa, since Lebanon could not negotiate for it; Syria would have to do that all by itelf. However - and this is the very short and incomplete version - Syria and Nasrallah managed to convince the Lebanese government that the Chebaa territory was actually theirs and not Syria's. What a convenience for Syria and Hizbullah; Hizbullah could continue its resistance against Israel under the presumption that the Israeli occupation continued, and Syria could continue to utilize Hizbullah as a weapon with which to influence the Lebanese government. Hizbullah's existence as a military movement is guaranteed as long as the status of Chebaa remains so ambiguous. Like I said, short version.

And thanks for the words of praise and encouragement. If you think that I am free from bias, however, you're not reading closely enough :)

Thanks a lot for your very interesting news. I do not envy the lot of Druze and Christian residents of southern Lebanon who are going to be caught in the middle.

There was an article in Ha'aretz recently that included interviews of soldiers from the Druze & Circassian IDF Batallion which took over Marwa7een.

Here's the article in Hebrew:
http://www.haaretz.co.il/hasite/spages/741962.html?more=1

Here's an English article from ynet.news about the Druze batallion's operation:

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3279867,00.html

Herev battalion enters villages

On Saturday, the Herev battalion operated in Marwahin, about two kilometers into southeast Lebanon, and discovered a great deal of Hizbullah weapons there. While forces were operating, shells were fired at them from a neighboring village. The Air Force was prepared to back up troops operating on the ground. After difficult battles the army also took control of Maroun a-Ras.

Most residents of the village had cooperated with the IDF’s pleas to evacuate to the north, across the Litani River, clearing the way for the army to operate without fear of harming civilians.

“We searched through the village carefully, we went house to house, and we found three sites where Hizbullah operatives had been hiding out. We could tell by the flak jackets, helmets, and even the cups of coffee still sitting on the table – but the Hizbullah men apparently fled when we entered. We also found a lot of ammunitions, including weapons, Lau rocket launchers in the yard of a mosque, binoculars, and various rockets,” said battalion commander Lt. Col. Wajadee.

“The operation was extremely tense,” Wajadee said. “We were there for three nights and expected terrorists might attack us at any moment.”

Wajadee said the terrorists used sites in the village to survey and collect information on Israeli communities across the border. An 80-year-old Lebanese man, who remained nearly alone in the town, told soldiers that residents did not cooperate with Hizbullah, but Hizbullah forced themselves on the village and used the residents in operations against Israel.

According to the battalion commander, his soldiers achieved important accomplishments in the framework of the operation. Many terrorists fled the village and arms that constituted a threat to Israel were confiscated. “The soldiers embarked on the mission with high morale and motivation. They knew this was a special and important operation. I am pleased that we completed it smoothly, with no casualties.”

This is just an example of what will take place in the next few days. More battalions will repeat the activities of the Herev battalion in other Lebanese villages throughout the south. Elite units will be dispatched to villages considered most problematic, such and Bint Jabel, while other forces will enter villages anticipated to be quieter.

Very disturbing news about Mari village. How awful for the inhabitans to be trapped in this impossible situation. And how terrible that the Lebanese government/army does nothing to help them :(

As for the Shebba farms, just to make sure everyone realizes that Israel has zero claims over them. If you ask me, we should have withdrawn from the damn spot and let Syria and HA fight over it (or not, as the case may be). We as Israelis, certainly have no attachment to the place. Hope to get rid ot it soon ;-)
